I've always considered myself an engineer first. I love taking an idea from a blank page to a real product — understanding the problem, choosing the architecture, designing the data, writing code, and bringing the right people together to build it.
Engineer first.
I've led engineering teams and organizations, but I've never wanted leadership to mean walking away from engineering. I still want to understand the architecture, review the code, solve hard problems, and stay close to what the team is building.
I'm especially drawn to startups and early-stage products, where the architecture isn't predetermined and today's decisions can shape the company for years.
Start with the problem.
At HSN, engineers had settled into building desktop applications. When I saw how the software was actually used, people were rarely at their desks. We pushed toward mobile and web because that matched how the work really happened.
Understand the problem before deciding on the technology.
I like building from zero.
At Washio, a friend and I were the first two engineers. We went from an idea to a functioning product and business in weeks. That's still what excites me about early-stage companies: turning a blank page into something people can actually use.
Build teams that aren't afraid to build.
Software will have bugs. Engineers will make mistakes. Accountability matters, but blame culture doesn't make software better — it makes people afraid to make decisions.

Away from the keyboard
Away from the keyboard, I'm a husband and dad. There's a good chance you'll find me with my boys, around a soccer field, playing soccer myself, or out riding a motorcycle.
